Conference "Journey to the land of the Mazzeri", Saturday 06 December at 2pm at the Petreto-Bicchisano Media Library.
Laure QUATRINI-CECCALDI presents her "Journey to the land of the Mazzeri".
Throughout her talk, she attempts to reconstruct how they were recruited and trained, and what their roles were in Corsican society. All in the style of a tale.
But who are the Mazzeri?
They are emblematic figures of Corsican folklore, acting as intermediaries between the world of the living and that of the dead.
Endowed with a unique gift, they receive revelations through their dreams, playing a role similar to that of shamans.
Their importance is particularly marked during the night of 31 July to 1 August, a symbolic period linked to the agrarian cycle and the stars.
During this night, the Mazzeri wage battle on the ridges, influencing the future of their community.
These symbolic confrontations, armed with asphodels, reflect the balance of power in the face of death.
The Mazzeri's dreams, in which they symbolically kill an animal, carry omens for the community.
Despite changes in their representation in contemporary culture, the Mazzeri continue to fascinate researchers and artists alike, despite the fact that modernity is threatening this age-old tradition.
