Village with character
in the heart of the corsican maquisOccupied since prehistoric times, the Giuncheto area bears witness to very early human occupation. In the Middle Ages, it took the form of a scattered settlement, typical of pastoral lifestyles. Around 1412, the land was ceded to the Camaldolese monks of Monte Cristo, who established a monastery and farm buildings. But the history of Giuncheto was marked by insecurity: barbarian attacks completely destroyed the religious installations.
It wasn’t until the 17th century that the region returned to stable life. Shepherds from the surrounding area returned to winter here with their flocks, and little by little the village was rebuilt as it is today.
Local oral tradition even has it that the apostle Paul had a church and a small monastery built on these heights before continuing his journey to Africa.
