Village with character
Colomba villageIn Fozzano, you’ll be following in the footsteps of Colomba, the heroine of Prosper Mérimée’s novel.Abloodyvendettafuelled by love and power erupts between two Corsican families.
First of all, get a feel for the tormented history of this authentic Corsican village by admiring the ancient “casa forte”. Fortified houses dating back to the early Middle Ages.
Then, as you wander through the village, you’re sure to come across the famous tower where this courageous woman lived. After years of fighting, Colomba only agreed to lay down her arms when a peace treaty was signed. When her husband died, she moved to Olmeto in southern Corsica, where she lived out her days. She was buried in the family tomb in Fozzano.
From the 15th century onwards, the commune assumed an important position in the Tavaria valley, as far as Campomoro. It is situated at an altitude of 390 metres and covers an area of 1950 hectares. Fozzano offers uninterrupted views over the Baracci Valley and the Gulf of Valinco.
And last but not least, don’t miss: the Church of the Annunciation and its 17th-century chapel. They are home to some very beautiful frescoes.
