According to the writer Prosper Mérimée, Sartène is "the most Corsican of all Corsican towns". Capital of the Terra dei Signori, the lofty façades of its thick-walled houses rise up like ramparts which resonate with the sounds of history. On Good Friday, the old town provides the backdrop for the impressive Le Catenacciu procession, in which a penitent dressed in a robe and red hood retraces the Passion of Christ, his feet shackled by a heavy chain and bearing a cross weighing 30 kilos. An unforgettable atmosphere of religious fervour and emotion.
