Getting there

Lion Rock

Famous and emblematic

When nature adorns itself with its most beautiful assets, astonishing rocks with original shapes offer breathtaking panoramas. In fact, halfway between Sartène and Bonifacio a lovely surprise awaits you! First of all, the legendary, famous and emblematic Lion of Roccapina rock emerges from the Corsican mountains, a place steeped in history.

Protecting the site, it has lain naturally for millennia and keeps watch over the horizon as well as any possible invasions that might have emerged from the sea! Right next to it is its Genoese tower, an edifice built on a rocky spur to defend against barbarian attacks. This sculpted animal is none other than the result of erosion between the sun crystallising the salt, the wind carrying the sea spray and the rain. This phenomenon is called “I taffoni“.

A dream beach!

The bay of Roccapina

Then, the sumptuous beach of fine sand below and its turquoise water will have you dreaming from the road. Not a dwelling near this beach, just preserved nature. In fact, even though it’s very popular in the summer months, we have to admit, Roccapina Bay is truly fabulous.

An ideal place to recharge your batteries! It’s accessible via a fairly long dirt track, which is a little chaotic but any dream beach has to be earned. One thing’s for sure, you’ll find a car park nearby so you can put your towel down on the warm sand straight away!

A casa di Roccapina

The interpretation centre

Finally, at the pass, don’t miss the interpretation centre “a casa di Roccapina”, a former cantonier’s house converted into a remarkable museum space.

Themed exhibition rooms and a film projection make for a most successful setting.

Discover the island’s tormented past, its life, its history with the help of an audio guide. Learn about rock erosion. Head outside for a walk where you’ll see emblematic flora and fauna, a panoramic view of this famous rock and its beach.
