Corsican village
In the footsteps of our ancestorsNestled in the heart of the Sartenais region, the commune of Foce-Bilzese (Foci è Bilzesi in Corsican) bears witness to a rich history. Once the fiefdom of the Arrainchi lordly family, whose main seigneury was Attalà, the area was bustling with activity in the Middle Ages, as evidenced by the many Romanesque chapels dotted around the area.
The village of Foce, the closest to Sartène, has a church dedicated to San Micheli, celebrated on September 29. The hamlets of Bilzesi, Casa and Casa Nova were developed in the 19th century and are still inhabited today, while others, such as a Petrosa, although boasting a remarkable body of buildings, are now abandoned.
Then, further to the west of the commune, the ruins of the chapel of Saint Georges are also worth a visit. And finally, half an hour’s walk away, the “Castello di Barici” well known for having once been an important place in the region.
There are numerous footpaths offering walks in the heart of wild nature and splendid views over the valley.
