Corsican village
In the footsteps of our ancestorsNestling in the heart of the Sartenais region, the municipality of Foce-Bilzese (Foci è Bilzesi in Corsican) bears witness to a rich history. Once the stronghold of the Arrainchi family, whose main seigneury was Attalà, the region was a bustling place in the Middle Ages, as evidenced by the many Romanesque chapels dotted around the area.
The village of Foce, closest to Sartène, has a church dedicated to San Micheli, celebrated on September 29. The hamlets of Bilzesi, Casa and Casa Nova were developed in the 19th century and are still inhabited today, while others, such as a Petrosa, despite having remarkable buildings, are now abandoned.
Then, further to the west of the town, you can visit the ruins of the chapel of Saint George. And finally, half an hour’s walk away is the Castello di Barici, well known for having once been an important place in the region.
Numerous footpaths allow you to wander in the heart of the wilderness and enjoy splendid views over the valley.
