Granace

Just a few kilometres from Sartène, nestling at an altitude of 300 metres between wooded hills and fragrant scrubland, the village of Granace offers an authentic setting conducive to peace and relaxation. Its name comes from the Corsican word “granace”, meaning “land of grain”, a reminder of the farming traditions of this rural commune in Corse-du-Sud.

Getting there

The story

haven of peace

in the heart of southern Corsica

The history of Granace is as discreet as it is deeply rooted. In 1507, during the war between Genoa and Count Rinuccio della Rocca, the territory was completely ravaged. It was not until the end of the 16th century that shepherds from Zicavo began to occupy the area on a seasonal basis. They first built huts to winter with their flocks, before eventually settling here permanently, giving rise to the hamlet of Granaccia, now Granace.

A simple, living heritage
At the hamlet of Saparedda, you’ll find the town hall as well as the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, also patron saint of Zicavo. Every 15 August, the community gathers to celebrate the patron saint’s feast day, in an atmosphere of contemplation and tradition.

In the heart of nature

From the village, small, unmarked paths take you on a journey of discovery through unspoilt nature, wooded valleys, open vistas and absolute silence. It’s the perfect place for a walk in Corsica, away from the crowds and totally immersed in the landscape.

Discovering another village

A town with a rich historical past and an important cultural heritage, Sartène is full of little nooks and crannies hidden away in its picturesque streets. All the more reason to linger over its architecture, monuments, square and treasures! There’s a good reason why Prosper Mérimée dubbed it “the most Corsican of Corsican towns”.
