GranaceSmall, peaceful village near Sartène

Just a few kilometres from Sartène, nestling at an altitude of 300 metres between wooded hills and fragrant scrubland, the village of Granace offers an authentic setting conducive to peace and relaxation. Its name comes from the Corsican word “granace”, meaning “land of grain”, a reminder of the farming traditions of this rural commune in Corse-du-Sud.

Getting there

The story

haven of peace

in the heart of southern Corsica

The history of Granace is as discreet as it is deeply rooted. In 1507, during the war between Genoa and Count Rinuccio della Rocca, the area was completely ravaged. The village was abandoned and left to its own devices for several decades.

It wasn’t until the end of the 16th century that shepherds from Zicavo began to occupy the area on a seasonal basis. They first built huts to winter with their flocks, before eventually settling here permanently, giving rise to the hamlet of Granaccia, now Granace.

⛪ A simple, living heritage
In the hamlet of Saparedda, you’ll find the town hall and the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, also patron saint of Zicavo. Every 15 August, the community gathers to celebrate the patron saint’s day, in an atmosphere of meditation and tradition.

In the heart of nature

From the village, small unmarked footpaths take you on a discovery of wild nature, with wooded valleys, open vistas and absolute silence. It’s the perfect place for a walk in Corsica, away from the crowds and totally immersed in the landscape.

Sartène

Discovering another village

A town with a rich historical past and an important cultural heritage, Sartène is full of little nooks and crannies hidden away in its picturesque streets. All the more reason to linger over its architecture, monuments, square and treasures! There’s a good reason why Prosper Mérimée dubbed it “the most Corsican of Corsican towns”.

A rural fair

The Granace fair is a real invitation to discover the soul of rural Corsica. In this charming stone village, time seems to stand still as the narrow streets come alive with the stalls of producers and artisans who have come to share their treasures. Farmhouse cheeses, generous wines, traditional charcuterie, olive oil and local sweets: each stall tells a story of local produce and passion. More than just a market, the Granace fair is a time to meet and exchange ideas, where visitors can taste, listen, admire… and let themselves be seduced by the authenticity of Corsica. A blend of heritage, gastronomy and conviviality, this rural festival is a must for anyone wanting to experience Corsica from the inside.
