The port of Propriano is much more than just a starting point: it’s a place to live, to meet and to discover.

A little history

Propriano may be a popular seaside village today, but its history is surprisingly recent: the commune came into being in the XIXᵉcentury. Yet the surrounding area bears traces of a much older past.

In and around the islet of Poraja , Greek and Roman remains, including burials, bear witness to the site’s ancient occupation. The region has also suffered from successive invasions, notably by the Barbary pirates, which hampered its development for several centuries.

Recent archaeological excavations have brought to light the ruins of a group of churches and an ancient necropolis, adding to the heritage interest of this town where nature, history and modernity meet.

Not to be missed:

Perched high above the town, thechurch of Notre-Dame de la Miséricorde, built between 1864 and 1881, watches over Propriano and its gulf. Every year, it becomes the beating heart of one of the region’s biggest religious festivals: the procession of Saint Erasmus, the patron saint of fishermen, celebrated on 2 June.

This highlight of local life combines fervour, tradition and conviviality, offering visitors an authentic immersion in the Corsican soul. A not-to-be-missed experience if you’re visiting at this time of year.
