The Genoese Towers

Standing facing the Mediterranean, the Genoese towers are among the most iconic features of the Corsican coastline.

Built mainly between the 16th and 17th centuries to monitor the coastline and protect the local population from raids by sea, they once formed a veritable network of defence and early warning posts all around the island.

Today, these stone sentinels bear witness to several centuries of history. Perched on headlands, overlooking wild coves or accessible via a footpath, they also offer some of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Sartenais Valinco Taravo region.

Campomoro, the iconic

At the head of the Gulf of Valinco, the Campomoro Tower overlooks the sea from its rocky promontory.

Built in the 16th century, it is the most imposing Genoese tower in Corsica and is now one of the iconic sites of ‘La Corse des Origines’.

From the village of Campomoro, a short climb takes you to the tower and its fortified enclosure. Once at the top, the view sweeps across the Gulf of Valinco, the rugged coastline and the inland hills, all the way to the Aiguilles de Bavella.

You can continue your exploration on foot along the Campomoro-Senetosa coastal path, in the heart of a preserved natural area where maquis scrub, wind-sculpted rocks, coves and panoramic views of the Mediterranean follow one after another. A place where heritage and nature become one.

A heritage to discover on foot
The Genoese towers also offer a wonderful opportunity to explore the area in a different way.

Some are just a few minutes’ walk apart, whilst others can only be reached after a coastal hike. Each one tells the story of the ancient bond between the people of Corsica and the Mediterranean.

From Campomoro to Senetosa, from Olmeto to Roccapina, follow in the footsteps of these stone sentinels and discover another side to ‘Corsica of Origins’.

Other towers dot the coastline of the Sartenais Valinco Taravo region and bear witness to this maritime history.

The Micalona Tower
Overlooking the Gulf of Valinco, the Micalona Tower dominates a landscape where scrubland, sea and hills meet. Its location offers a remarkable view of the coastline.

The A Calanca Tower
On the Olmeto coast, the A Calanca Tower also serves as a reminder of the gulf’s former surveillance system. It stands in an unspoilt Mediterranean setting, nestled between the vegetation and the sea.

The Senetosa Tower
More rugged and secluded, the Senetosa Tower stands in the heart of an exceptional stretch of coastline. It is one of the landmarks along the Campomoro–Senetosa trail and offers a chance to immerse oneself in unspoilt Corsica, far from roads and the hustle and bustle.

The Roccapina Tower
Overlooking one of the most famous landscapes in southern Corsica, the Roccapina Tower watches over a bay of turquoise waters, facing the famous Granite Lion. A spectacular site where historical heritage and natural landscape complement one another.
