History and terroir

Historic village

Perched on its rocky outcrop

Sartène, the largest commune in Corsica, is perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Gulf of Valinco and offers breathtaking views all the way to the Aiguilles de Bavella. This town, rich in art and history, offers visitors the chance to discover an authentic, religious and natural heritage of great diversity.

As you explore the narrow, picturesque streets of Sartène’s old town, you can admire its medieval quarter, the Sainte-Marie church, the town hall (former palace of the Genoese governors), and the watchtower, the last vestige of the 15th-century ramparts. The Place de la Libération, lined with cafés, is a popular meeting place for the people of Sarten. For a complete immersion in the town’s history, audio-guides are available from the Sartène Tourist Office.
