Historic village
Perched on its rocky outcropSartène, the largest municipality in Corsica, is perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Valinco Gulf, with a breathtaking view as far as the Aiguilles de Bavella. Classified as a “Ville d’Art et d’Histoire” (Town of Art and History), the town boasts an authentic, diverse religious and natural heritage.
As you explore the narrow, picturesque streets of Sartène’s old town, you can admire its medieval quarter, the church of Sainte-Marie, the town hall (former palace of the Genoese governors) and the watchtower, the last vestige of the 15th-century ramparts. The Place de la Libération (commonly known as the Place Porta by Sartenais), lined with cafés, is a meeting place for all generations of Sartenais. For a complete immersion in the town’s history, audio guides are available from the Sartène Tourist Office.
