Corsica Mountain

A land of mountains, history and Corsican culture

Towards the Alta Rocca, the Bavella peaks

Ajouter aux favoris

Literally “high rock”, it is also known as the “land of the lords” because it was home to the “sgiò”, the wealthy bourgeois and aristocrats who came to recharge their batteries on their land. This stunningly beautiful region is a veritable crossroads where nature, history and tradition meet. The Alta Rocca, covered in oak and pine forests, is dotted with picturesque villages clinging to the sides of the mountains, such as Zonza, Levie and Quenza. This region offers a wonderful way to discover Corsica, with its contrasting landscapes and strong cultural identity. It’s a haven of peace for nature lovers and one of Corsica’s top hiking destinations.

The peaks of Bavella

It’s best to set off early in the morning on a clear day and take the road to Sainte Lucie de Tallano and Lévie from the A Madunina junction. You will then pass through Zonza (its racecourse is the highest in Europe, with harnessed trotting races in season) before arriving at the Bavella site.

At the rest area, you can admire the Aiguilles de Bavella in the distance. Freshness guaranteed. Descend to Solenzara for a swim in the river.

A fabulous archaeological site

Cucuruzzu

On your way, stop off to visit one of the many typical Corsican villages, such as Sainte Lucie de Tallano or Lévie, or take a stroll around the archaeological site of Cucuruzzu.

A place steeped in history where you can discover the remains of a village and archaeological remains. The tour begins with a staircase cut into the rock. From here, you can access the castle (casteddu di cucuruzzu), a fortress dating from the Bronze Age, and continue on to the 8-metre circular tower (Torra). It was used as a defence in case of attack. This monument is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The path will take you to the 2nd remarkable site of Capula. This is a medieval fortification. Here you can see a prehistoric stele, as well as the ruins of a Capula castle. Keep your eyes peeled for a glimpse of the base of a keep.

A wonderful spot for a family walk in the shade of the oak trees. Lovers of nature and history will be enchanted.

Relaxing or gourmet break

On your way to or from a walk, relax in the 37° hot sulphurous water baths at Les Caldanes and pamper yourself. Take a wellness break during your holiday in southern Corsica. You can also go wine-tasting in Sarten or sample local produce in a restaurant.
