Description
“I met my husband in the boarding area for an EasyJet flight, and I have to say I didn’t like him at all from the start.”
A single woman, who never reveals her name, begins her story with this sentence. After a period of partying and carefree living, she decides to travel to the four corners of the world with the sole aim of finding herself. And it is in Italy, in a boarding lounge, that she meets her future husband.
With humour, she tells us about this romantic encounter, her life as a couple, her promising career, her sorrows and joys, and her life as a mother. In short, the life of a woman that is, on the face of it, quite ordinary – until everything changes…
With sincerity, she lays her life bare in a narrative that shifts between reality, memories and fantasies. Funny yet also brutal and provocative, this woman lays herself bare and tells her story without mincing words, establishing a disarming—sometimes unsettling, often indulgent—intimacy with the audience through a wealth of detail:
‘And if it gets difficult – and it’s going to get difficult – I want you to remember two things: remember that it didn’t happen to you, and that it isn’t happening right here, right now. All right?’ (Excerpt)
As the mischief fades, tragedy takes hold.
The story, which began as a party, unfolds as a thriller.
Dennis Kelly’s writing is part of the ‘In Your Face’ movement of the 1990s. It is abrupt, unfiltered, moving and sincere. His world, reminiscent of the films of Ken Loach and Mike Leigh, the theatre of Gary Owen and Shakespeare, probes the depths of the human soul with a touch of humour to heighten the drama.
‘This razor-sharp drama explores the hidden mechanisms of masculinity, romantic relationships, fear and madness.’ (Arche Éditeur).
