Description
Their mother has just died. Emmanuel, the eldest son, joins his sister Paola, accompanied by his wife, Andrée, for the wake. Paola has never left the village or the family home; she looked after their father first, then their mother, right until the end. Emmanuel, for his part, left to lead the life that was expected of him, in the city. The brother and sister are perhaps reunited for the last time in the house where they grew up, on the eve of the funeral – the actual funeral of their mother, but also the symbolic end of the life they have always known. When Pacôme, the other brother—the youngest, ‘the outcast’—arrives to keep vigil over the deceased’s body and bid her a final farewell, tongues are loosened and buried emotions surge to the surface, suddenly intensified. It is time for confessions and settling of scores, under the gaze of the mother who watches from beyond the grave and, in a soliloquy, recounts her version of the story…
