Paris, 1928. Antoine Balestro, a fashionable young painter, has been unable to work since the death of his wife, and Armand, his gallery owner, despairs. One drunken night, Antoine tries to contact his wife through a clairvoyant. Unknowingly, he is actually talking to Suzanne, a lowly fairground woman who has sneaked into the caravan to steal food. Suzanne proves to have a talent for impersonation and, quickly assisted by Armand, she gives one fake séance after another. Little by little, Antoine regains his inspiration, but things become more complicated for Suzanne as she slowly falls in love with the man she is manipulating...
