Description
This unique occasion, steeped in fervour and contemplation, attracts thousands of visitors, eager to discover the spiritual power and beauty of this ancient ceremony.
During this procession, an anonymous penitent, the ‘Catenacciu’, drags a heavy chain behind him and carries a 33kg wooden cross, symbolising Christ’s captivity and suffering.
Dressed in red and walking in silence, he embodies Christ’s pain and sacrifice, whilst the inhabitants of Sartène follow the procession through the town’s narrow streets, lit by the subdued glow of torches and candles.
This tradition, which dates back several centuries, is much more than a simple religious act: it is a true journey into the soul of Corsica, blending culture, history and spirituality.
Don’t miss this exceptional event – an experience that is both moving and visually stunning, offering you the chance to discover Sartène and Corsica from a completely new perspective.
Join us to experience the magic of the Catenacciu and immerse yourself in the authenticity of Sartène, a town where tradition and devotion come together.
