Place Porta, 20100 Sartène
Built in the 16th century of imposing granite, the church stands out for its three-storey openwork bell tower, topped by a dome, which dominates the old town and the central square. To the left of the main entrance hang the chains and cross carried by the red penitent during the Good Friday procession, one of Sartène's most powerful and emblematic rites, perpetuated every year in a striking atmosphere. Inside, the building boasts a superb Baroque-style high altar, composed of polychrome marble imported in the 17th century from Liguria and Tuscany, bearing witness to the Italian influences and artistic wealth of the period. A place of meditation, history and living traditions, the church of Sainte-Marie is an essential stop-off point for discovering the deep-rooted identity of the Sartenais region.
